The thing about my mum is, when she decides on where to eat, it always has to be a place that serves Teochew food. Last weekend saw us patronising the Ban Heng Restaurant at Boon Keng Road. The food is cooked Teochew style there and although I'm not that big of a Teochew food fan, the place certainly made my mum and grandfather really happy.
Mum ordered the buddha jumps over the wall set menu for us and it consisted of 7 different dishes. It cost us $39.80 which is pretty reasonable considering how the price jumps by two or three fold when it is served at a wedding luncheon.
We started off with the Prawn salad with mango. This dish is basically prawns drizzled with mayonnaise sauce and served with mango slices as seen from above. The prawns were fresh and the mango gave it a contrasting taste. Thumbs up to this dish. This dish is definitely worth ordering as a starter.
Our next dish, supposedly the star dish as that's were the name of our set menu is derived from. We each had one big chunk Shark's fin, abalone, dried scallops and sea cucumber in our bowl of soup. The soup's broth was flavourful although I felt the ingredients need a tad bit more of salt. But you see, that's the Teochew style of cooking. They tend not to have so much of salt in their dishes.
The steamed cod fish with diced chye poh and garlic was our next dish. The cod had this extremely milky taste. It did go well with the soya sauce and this dish was wiped out of the lunch table in seconds.
The following dish was deep fried pork ribs cooked with BBQ sauce. The sauce was really tasty! It sealed the deal for the dish.
This broccoli dish took me by surprise. It was so crunchy and tasty with the bits of garlic. I love how the cook managed to give this plate of broccoli that added crunch. Definitely one of the better vegetables dishes which I have tasted in a Chinese restaurant.
Okay so here's your typical let's wish Ah gong a long life noodles dish. It was pretty normal but you know, mandatory.
Our last dish, allowed you to choose either a cold or hot bowl of dessert from their dessert menu. I had the longans and honey sea coconut. Pretty hard to go wrong with this dish.
My older folks certainly had a whale of a time at this place. It's certainly a good place to celebrate Ah Gong or Ah Ma's birthday if you're looking for authentic Chinese food. And with all these Chinese restaurants being air-conditioned, it makes every family member even happier as you get to beat the heat.
